Welcome to the home page of HeRMES. HeRMES is a student-run free clinic which operates in partnership with area health clinics that serve the uninsured and underserved of Illinois. By partnering with existing clinics, HeRMES can leverage the abilities of dedicated, talented volunteers to make the best use of their time while furthering the mission and goals of our collaborating institutions. HeRMES is operated entirely by students of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, and medical supervision is by University of Illinois College of Medicine faculty who volunteer their time and skills. However, it is not an official University activity and operates as an independent organization. HeRMES was created in response to a pair of converging needs: • The growing population of medically uninsured patients is greater than local clinics' ability to care for them; • U of I medical, graduate, undergraduate and professional students found themselves desiring greater exposure to working with underserved populations, especially in primary care settings. From these needs was born HeRMES. |
